Sea turtles in Zanzibar face a wide range of threats, including but not limited to pollution (light, chemicals, and plastic), coastal development, and poaching. Under the Wave (UTW) proudly runs a number of projects aimed at managing these threats. Our turtle hatchery, for example, has successfully released over 2000 turtles since 2021. These efforts have led to the planned expansion of this project to other sites on the island of Unguja. In doing so, we need to develop a training program that highlights the value of turtle conservation, how to identify tracks and nests, and how to create and maintain databases with key information. This internship provides an exciting opportunity to participate in fieldwork, gain hands-on experience in marine conservation research and project development, and to contribute to the active conservation of this flagship species. |
