Description Plants under salt stress suffer severe changes to their nutrient uptake, which alters their nutrient composition. While some ions are taken up more due to their higher availability, others are less so due to higher competition with other ions.

In this project, these changes in nutrient composition in the plant can be measured with an XRF spectrometer. Using lettuce (Lactuca sativa) accessions as well as accessions of its close relative (Lactuca serriola) grown in hydroponic conditions, this project aims to determine how different accession’s nutrient composition changes under salt stress.

Additionally, if the student is interested in some molecular techniques, genotyping of GMO plants related to ion transport can be added to the project.
Used skills Working in sterile conditions, growing plants in hydroponics, use of XRF technology, plant phenotyping, statistics to analyse results.
Requirements Interest and understanding of plant physiology, fulfilled plant-related thesis pre-requisite.
