Description | Increasing global temperatures is a challenge for agriculture, but sometimes also opens doors for new opportunities. Paddy rice is a crop not traditionally found in northern Europe, but could play an important role in future landscapes. Recently, field experiments in drained Swiss lowlands have shown that organically-managed paddy rice can be highly productive for farmers, while at the same time providing much-needed habitat for endangered wetland species. With discussions on reflooding agricultural land in the Netherlands, paddy rice might also be an attractive nature-based solution here.
In this thesis, you will map suitability for patty rice in the Netherlands, get in contact with stakeholders, and discuss limitations and potentials. |
