Description | In the Binnenveld wet meadows, north-west of Wageningen, a large-scale nature restoration project has taken place in the past years. Over a large area, the top layer of soil (15-50 cm) was removed in order to get rid of excessive nutrients, resulting from former agricultural land use. The thesis student (BSc thesis) will collect soil samples near locations were vegetation relevees (plant species lists) have been made. The soil samples will be analysed in the PEN lab to detect changes in soil composition compared to 5 years ago. By lab analyses of soil and soil moisture samples we can also detect whether the groundwater is indeed reaching the surface, which is beneficial for plant and insect biodiversity. The field work can only be done in october-february before the bird breeding season starts. |
