Description The PLAN’EAT project at large focuses on food system transitions for a planetary healthy diet. Within this bigger project, there are multiple opportunities for thesis students to write a thesis on a topic related to food systems and food system governance in the EU. The connections between policies, macro-economic mechanisms, infrastructures and other constitutive elements of food systems have long been recognised. However, the complexity of food systems and of their feedback loops have usually constrained studies to siloed approaches, such as the value-chain development approach or the market systems approach, which either tackle only one objective or only one sub-system. On the contrary, an integrated food systems analysis adopts a holistic approach to the assessment of agri-food-systems, as well as their interactions with adjacent systems, such as the financial system.
Against this background, there is an opportunity to study food system drivers that affect the European food system, in particular political, economic & commercial drivers. We would like to know what potential leverage points could be to stimulate food system transition. The study could rely on literature reviewing, complemented with expert interviews and potentially focus groups, but other methods are also possible depending on interest. Fieldwork could be conducted in one of the nine living labs associated with the project (Ireland, Sweden, Poland, Germany, Hungary, Greece, Spain, France, Italy).
Used skills Literature review, qualitative research skills (interviewing, potentially focus groups), no particular language skills.
