Problemcontext
Plasticsandmicroplasticsarecurrentlyenvironmentalissuesinagriculturalsoils.Althoughsomeplasticsaresoldasbiodegradable,researchersarestillfindingmicroplasticsandplasticscontainingpolybutyleneadipateterephthalate(PBAT)andpolylacticacid(PLA)inagriculturalsoilsseveralyearsaftertheirapplication.Low-densitypolyethylene(LDPE)plasticsarealsofoundinhighconcentrationsinthisenvironment.Previousresearchhasshownthepotentialofmicroorganismsdwellingintheearthworm`sguttoinitiatethedegradationofthesepolymers.Nevertheless,littleisknownabouttheplasticdegradationmechanismsandratesonceexposedtotheisolatedmicroorganisms.Inthisstudy,thesixcandidatestrainshavealreadybeenisolated,andweareinterestedinevaluatingthepotentialofthesemicroorganismstodegradedifferenttypesofplastics

Aretheselectedandisolatedmicroorganismsfromtheearthworms`gutabletodegradePBAT-,PLA-,andUV-agedLDPEplastics?Ifyes,whichstrainsaremorepronetoattackwhichplastics?
What is expected from the student (type of research)
Wearelookingforanenthusiasticstudentwillingtoparticipateintheentireprocess,fromdesigningandsettinguptheexperimentwithtargetedmicroorganismstodataanalysisandwriting.
Basicmicrobiologylaboratoryskillsareaplus,aswellasbasicknowledgeofbiologyandbiochemistry.
