Description Problem context:
The main tools used to monitor and mitigate droughts are Drought Early Warning Systems (DEWS). They rely on indices that depict accurately the climatic and hydrological aspects of drought but do not encompass yet, variables depicting the drought impacts on human welfare. This is despite the fact that drought is a hazard that can significantly affect human wellbeing and human activities by leading for example to water and food insecurities, conflicts and losses of livelihoods. At the global scale, human welfare is addressed with the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) that represent the development priorities of both low- or high- income countries and that also have indices to measure their achievement. Drought mitigation and DEWS are embedded in these long-term goals from a perspective that monitoring and mitigating drought impacts on human welfare is enhancing the achievement of some or all of the SDG. Therefore, this calls for additional research analysing the role of drought in research on the Sustainable Development Goals, and more precisely about whether or not the DEWS are incorporated into development efforts by researchers.
Country: The Netherlands
Host institute: Wageningen University

Research Objective/Question
The objective of this MSc thesis research is to gain insights on the extent that DEWS are included into SDG efforts and to formulate recommendations based on the results.

What is expected from the student (type of research)
The student is expected to do a bibliometric analysis of publications about DEWS and SDG and to conduct an analysis, in the scope of drought mitigation and SDGs, based on the results.
Used skills Text mining or topical modelling; literature review
Requirements Knowledge on systematic literature review and knowledge of and interest in R or any other scripting language is required
