Description For an ongoing project on sea urchins (www.hvhl.nl/diadema) we're looking for multiple internship students who can come to Saba for 5-6 months starting from February 2022. You will be working on rearing and releasing sea urchins in an attempt to restore their populations on coral reefs. Sea urchins are an important herbivore, and can aid coral restoration by grazing away (macro) algae. The coming year, we'll be working on questions such as: 1) What is the effect of depth on natural settlement, 2) What are the cues sea urchins use to synchronize reproduction events, 3) What is the effect of predators on released urchins, 4) Can we rear extra strong sea urchins in the lab to improve their survival in the wild, and 5) What is the effect of released urchins on the coral reef.

Interested? Send a short motivation letter (including research and diving experience) to alwin.hylkema@hvhl.nl or alwin.hylkema@wur.nl
