Description | Soil erosion is a relevant challenge for the farmers in steep slope Italian vineyards Several erosion modelling approaches have previously been conducted by the University of Padova leading to interesting scientific insights However, the resulting maps and recommendations so far have been mostly adapted to academic standards, rather than optimising field relevance for the farmers or land owners
Research Objective/Question The objective is to optimise the communicative value of erosion maps, i e exploring user friendly and field relevant maps that translate scientific findings into a practical guide for farmers Questions that need to be answered, include the actual processes of interest by the farmers, the scale of input and output data, and exploring suitable map presentation and sharing techniques A final product will be a generic workflow What is expected from the student (type of research) “Gezond boerenverstand or a good deal of common sense is crucial in this assignment. However, for bridging the gap to the farmer, the student must also be able to play the role of scientist, i.e. having sufficient knowledge of erosion processes and independent skills in GIS analysis. Finally, a good feel for graphical presentation (e.g. producing captivating 2 D/ 3 D maps) and sharing techniques are important. |
