Description This consultancy/research assignment will take place in a fruit orchard in Beesdof about 6 hectares. The orchards are situated along the Linge on which apples and pears are grown. The soils are old river clay soils, with some higher elevated areas with more sandy soils suited for fruit cultivation.

The different parcels show differences in growth, of which the cause is unclear. Some rows of pears show low yields every year. The cause could be variations in soil type, presence of sand strips, etc., but research could maybe prove this.

Research Objective

Based on field research, soil measurements and drone data, find out what could be the reason of the variation in yield within the orchards. Is it the meandering of the Linge in the past, or do other characteristics play a role here?

What is expected from the student (type of research)

You will do a lot of practical research: GIS, digital terrain analysis, field research (even in Corona-times possible!)

The output should be a report on the explanation of the variation in yield containing various attractive maps, good enough to inform the owners of the orchard. This means this assignment is more of a consultancy assignment than pure academic research.
