Description | Low agricultural productivity is a key barrier to sustainable development in the global South. Current agricultural practices are moreover often unsustainable, leading to land degradation and vulnerability to climatic and other disturbances. Interventions are needed to enhance productivity and environmental resilience, but should also empower local communities for long-term sustainability. The concept of agroecology has been coined as a bottom-up, people-centred approach to rural development based on agricultural diversity.
Research Objective/Question In the context of Southern Africa, how can agroecology be operationalized, and what are the most important aspects where the concept can contribute to sustainable agricultural development What is expected from the student (type of research) Review of case studies, interviews with regional researchers and development of an agroecological research concept that can be used to guide a research project. |
