Description Table is a new global platform for knowledge synthesis, reflective, critical thinking and dialogue on priority concerns and contestations around the future of food. Rooted in academia, Table is a collaboration between the University of Oxford, the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) and Wageningen University and Research (WUR). We offer 1-2 internship and volunteering opportunities (3-6 months) at a time for students with an interest in food systems sustainability.
As public awareness of crises such as climate change, biodiversity loss and inequality has grown, the environmental and social impacts of the food system are now subject to greater scrutiny. As a result, debates about the future of food – and how the food system can become sustainable, resilient, just, and ultimately “good” – are becoming more intense and polarised. At Table, we impartially set out the evidence, assumptions, and values that people bring to food system debates and seek to facilitate informed discussions.

Internships at Table involve a range of tasks, including:
- Research and writing for our peer-reviewed explainers
- Fact checking and interview preparation for our podcast Feed
- Assisting in the organisation of dialogue events
- Support on expanding our reach and online presence
- Contributing to our wider communications strategy

The exact topics and tasks that interns work on are shaped by a combination of their experience, relevant subject knowledge and interests, and the projects and activities we are currently working on.

An internship at Table provides you with excellent opportunities to:
- Learn more about food systems thinking
- Gain experience with research communication and inter- and transdisciplinary ways of working
- Deepen your knowledge of particular topics (e.g. by writing an explainer)
- Grow your network across disciplines, sectors and geographies
- Broaden your skill set by assisting in a variety of tasks

At the heart of Table is a small team of research and communications officers and senior academic staff based at the three participating Universities. We do most of our work remotely and only few meetings require on-site presence (subject to COVID regulations).

If you want to apply for an internship or volunteering position, please send your CV and a short cover letter to walterfraanje@tabledebates.org.
Used skills We look for interns at Masters or PhD level who have a desire to explore food systems debates impartially, and with a background in a field of science that is relevant to our work. Experience with events organisation, communications, social media, video editing or impact evaluation are desirable, though not necessary.
