Description Algae secrete Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs). Some of these substances reach concentrations so high that people can smell them. This is the case for dimethylsulphide, which is yielding that special ocean smell in the air. I would like you to review scientific literature what other volatile substances are being excreted by algae. I would like you to find out if there is a 'fingerprint' to make of the composition of volatiles by species/species group of algae. The gradient in the composition and concentration of volatile substances might tell us something about the algal blooms that occur. And because of climate change, the algal blooms will change composition, and maybe we can measure changes in algal species composition is space and time through measuring the VOCs.
