Description Subsoil compaction can have a detrimental effect on agricultural productivity, through limitation of the root system, disconnection from groundwater, and reduced permeability. The latter of these can result in periodic ponding of rainwater after (heavy) showers. Compaction itself is often invisible from the surface, but some of its effect are visible. Insight in the patterns of such effects could therefore be used to identify areas with subsoil compaction.

For this MSc thesis the aim is to map agricultural areas in Flevoland which consistently show ponding of rainwater, indicating insufficient drainage capacity. You will make use of satellite data (radar, visible & derivatives) to make an assessment of ponding frequency and patterns.

We are looking for an MSc student with affinity for satellite data analysis and digital soil mapping. Previous experience in working with satellite imagery is helpful, but not requirered.
