Description MSc thesis/ BSc thesis / internship:

Images that travel around the world via the Internet and social media pack facts and uncertainties. These images have a major influence on public debate and decisin-making on subjects. Our project addresses these Traveling of Framed Facts and Uncertainties (TOFU). In this project phase, we analyze online images and the accompanying texts used by our project partners and other experts on safe, healthy, and sustainable food.

We are recruiting one intern for the period of 3-6 months to work on the data collection and analysis of a dataset of images regarding food and health, using our theoretical references and our TOFU software. The software – a genuine development done as part of the TOFU project – crawls images from the Internet and provides support to the analysis of the frames these images communicate. With the software, it is possible to map out how different stakeholders communicate about food in text and images.

The intern will work closely with the TOFU project team and its relevant partners, RIVM and Voedingscentrum. We will train the intern to use our TOFU software and provide guidance on the analysis and outputs we expect.
Used skills Qualitative and quantitative analysis
Requirements We are looking for a highly ambitious student, a Dutch speaker, who is capable of working autonomously and has an affinity with scientific communication, controversial governance issues, framing theory, visual communication, and digital methods (working with internet and digital platform data).
