Description Sound is an important element in daily life. Also under water, a variety of sounds can be present. Studies performed mainly in the marine environment indicate that certain sounds may be regarded as noise pollution (e.g. off shore wind mills, boats) and that sound might differ among ecosystems. Furthermore, there are indications that the soundscape also reflect biodiversity (e.g. coral reefs).
From freshwater systems, hardly anything is known about soundscapes and noise pollution. Here, the soundscapes among different waters may be studied in the field, and ecological effects of sound under laboratory conditions.
