Description | Countries: Vientiane, Lao PDR
Host Institute: International Water Management Institute, Laos Period: Flexible (field work cannot take place from June to September due to poor road condition and access in the rainy seasons) Bridging the current disjuncture in hydropower decision making landscape in the Mekong region, this research aims to connect hydropower decision making structures, processes, and practices across scales (local, national, transboundary). Bridging this connection is key to ensure local community’s views are well represented in higher level hydropower decision making, and to identify potential entry points to strengthen pathways for rights based approaches. In particular, it will: 1) unpack local community’s views on water (in)security and strategies to strengthen their water rights towards equitable access to water; and 2) connect these views and strategies with formal hydropower decision making structures, processes, and practices at national and transboundary level. Research Objective/Question As part of ongoing collaboration between Water Resources Management Group at Wageningen University and International Water Management Institute, we welcome a student to conduct (field) research while focusing on one of the following research questions: • How do hydropower decision making structures, processes, and practices across scales (regional, national, local) correspond with local community’s water rights, and how do these contribute to and/or hinder inclusive development in the Mekong region? • What are local communities’ views on hydropower development? • What are potential entry points for inclusive development, while integrating gender and social equity? What is expected from the student (type of research) Field work based internship. IWMI will cover field trip expenses (including translation services), but will not provide monthly allowance. |
