Description | Country: ZAMBIA, ZIMBABWE (SOUTHERN AFRICA)
Host institute: SOLIDARIDAD Problem context Solidaridad is conducting a study to establish the opportunities for ethanol production in southern Africa, to promote clean energy in a region characterised by energy poverty Growing sugarcane for ethanol production threatens natural resources, in particular, water security in a region most vulnerable to the effects of climate change Sugarcane is a water intensive crop with significant impact on the environment Research Objective/Question This study will analyse the impact of growing sugarcane on water security issues in selected countries in southern Africa. This will include the impacts on the livelihoods of communities living near these water sources. Findings will be used to inform a data driven intervention that increases the production of sugarcane to meet growing demand for ethanol whilst ensuring climate smart agricultural practices to ensure the most efficient use of water. What is expected from the student (type of research) The student is expected to carry out primary and secondary research with a focus on the former This will include a range of interviews and surveys, with key stakeholders including sugarcane producers and relevant government departments. The student will also conduct observations at sugarcane sites in the region for data collection. Investigations will include the prediction of water quality and existing pollution in the relevant water bodies. Solidaridad will assist in conducting desk research and facilitate introductions to key stakeholders that they have existing relationships with. |
