Agro-export crops have become popular amongst producers in many parts of the world, especially fresh fruits and vegetables. However many of these crops are being produced exclusively with groundwater as this water source meets the water quality standards established for food safety standards of northern countries. As a result of the berry boom in Michoacán, in the aquifer of Cienega de Chapala, groundwater resources have come under great pressure as more and more producers tap groundwater to produce all sorts of berries.

Research Objective/Question
This research aims to understand how groundwater resources are being governed in the Aquifer of the Cienega de Chapala. It aims to unravel how legal procedures, the national water commission (CONAGUA), individual producers and politics interact with each other to shape groundwater access and use patterns in this aquifer.

What is expected from the student (type of research)
The student is expected to do fieldwork in the area of the aquifer Cienega de Chapala to understand the dynamics that are shaping groundwater use, governance and access. Through legal, institutional and ethnographic research and interviews the student(s) will identify and describe how groundwater governance is being shaped by the current social dynamics in a particular aquifer.
