Description Country: South Africa
Host institute: tbd, prob. Municipality of Graaff Reinet
Period: Summer 2020 to when finished

Problem context
After all the hullabaloo about Cape Town and its day zero (that never was...) drought is hitting other towns in South Africa. Graaff Reinet, a small town in the Karoo, has actually run dry. Tankers have to ferry water into the town from long distances (over 100 km).

Research Objective/Question
The question is: How do the various inhabitants (the swimming pool people and the folks in the townships) and other water users (industry, tourism, agriculture, environment) cope with the extreme drought situation? Could day zero have been prevented through water demand strategies? What can other towns in South Africa learn from Graaff Reinet’s experience?

What is expected from the student (type of research)
Three months of field work in Graaff Reinet and environs, consisting of (hydrological) data collection, interviews and observations. Independent work attitude and ‘make do’ approach will be helpful.
Used skills Qualitative research skills
Requirements Mastery of English, Xhosa and Afrikaans is helpful
