Organization
Solidaridad is a network organisation operating in 9 regions around the world, one of which is Eastern Africa, where a flagship project, Sustainable Landscape Management (SLM) of the Kilimanjaro Landscape, is being implemented. In this
project, there are programs interventions on tree planting, grassland management, land use planning, livestock management, coffee production and fruit & vegetable production. One goal of the SLM project, is to increase the resilience of the landscape to climate variability, and specifically to changes in land and water use patterns.

Topic
Land use in the Kilimanjaro landscape is very diverse. The Kilimanjaro Mountain has the status of a National Park which protects the remaining forest on the slopes, surrounded by a bufferzone where communities adjacent to the park can
access for forest products and firewood. The southern part of the mountain is known for the production of coffee, banana and fruits and vegetables. The northern zone of the mountain, partly a Wildlife Management Area, is characterized by Masaai settlement who migrate their livestock across the border with Kenia. As part of programme interventions in the Kilimanjaro Landscape, Solidaridad has engaged the Internal Drainage Basin Water Office, the government institution mandated to manage and control all water uses in the Northern zone, covering the entire area of the Kilimanjaro landscape. Specifically the expansion of vegetable production upstream is causing reduced water availability downstream and the water quality is negatively affected by pollution. Solidaridad intervention is geared to better understand how upland water use impacts the lowland and how to better arrange and control water rationing.

Solidaridad is seeking a student who can carry out an assessment regarding the seasonality of gravitational water flow across the Kilimanjaro landscape, to inform land use and water management interventions both upstream and downstream regarding availability, access and use of water for diverse range of water users in the landscape (i.e. vegetable producers, lifestock keepers).
