Description Since 2008 the Dutch NGO “Help a Child” implements in Rwanda the Self-Help Model which supports local communities to get together and find solutions to their own problems. This model focusses on economic, social and environmental resilience through a variety of trainings and skills – including farmer trainings, kitchen gardening, WASH, parenting trainings, saving and loans and management skills. However, what is lacking is a good scientific foundation for the approach and evidence about its impact.

The MSc thesis could exist in an in-depth research of the socio-economic effect of the Self-Help model and better understand how it contributes to sustainable livelihoods and resilient communities. The research should also pay due attention to identifying gaps in the approach, and how to better address land and water management issues, as well as sustainable farming within the current approach. The research will be done in the field and from Kigali, under the supervision and with logistical support from Help a Child Rwanda.
