Description | Cow dung pats on grassland are important for meadow birds and biodiversity: The tall grass surrounding dung pats offers good cover for meadow bird chicks against predation. Also, dung pats form a breeding ground for worms, flies and beetles, which form an important component of the diet of meadow birds and their chicks.
The potentially negative effect of the use of insecticides on farms on insects and meadow birds is receiving increasing attention. Many livestock holders use pour-on on their cows for fly-control. This product partly ends up in the dung. In this research, we would like to investigate what the effect of pour-on is on the number of insects in, under and on cow dung pats and on dung pat degradation. Practical period: design, conduct, analyse and report an experiment on the effect of the use of pour-on the number of insects in, under and on cow dung pats and on dung pat degradation at KTC Zegveld. Additionally, we offer the opportunity to participate in different projects at the Louis Bolk Institute. |
