Description | Decomposition of organic material by detritivores is one of the main processes in ecosystems. Decomposition of allochthonous material is in streams very important, but less is known of the breakdown of this matter in standing waters like small ponds or ditches. Also, the decomposition of autochthonous material (i.e. plants grown in the aquatic system) has not received a lot of attention. Various chemical substances may affect this process, but to what extend remains unclear.
Different aspects may be studied: decomposition under field conditions with different types of leaves, indoor experiment on the effect of e.g. pharmaceuticals on this process. |
