Description The Netherlands contain a significant proportion of Atlantic beech forest ecosystems. On the Veluwe, a number of old forest complexes contain well-developed forest ecosystems of this type in late-successional communities. The community dynamics are determined by strong competition from beech, slow tree recruitment due to herbivory and local extinctions of vascular plant species.
This project analysis 25 years of forest dynamics in the forest reserve Pijpebrandje in Speulderbos. The reserve, including 69 permanent plots, was established in 1984, and measured in 1988 and 1998. Recently the entire reserve was surveyed and mapped. In this project you will re-census the permanent plots and analyse tree population dynamics for the past 25 years.
