Description | The Donana region is located on the Atlantic coast of south-western Spain. An area of about 1,200 km2 within this region comprises both a National and a Natural Park. The Donana National Park (ca. 54,000 ha) was designated a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO in 1980 and a Wetland Site of International Importance by the Ramsar Convention in 1982 (though it entered onto the Montreux Record of Ramsar sites under threat in 1990), and was later declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1994. In cooperation with local researchers different topics can be studied, like effect of groundwater extraction on the ecology of the many shallow lakes, invasive species, problems with floating plants. |
