Description A wide range of antibiotics, disinfectants and pesticides are used to treat against parasites and kill unwanted organisms in aquaculture farms of South-East Asia. Residues of these compounds are released into the environment with aquaculture effluents, which may lead to adverse effects on the adjacent communities and ecosystems. During the last decades the understanding of potential impacts of aquaculture on the environment has improved, but still little is known about the effects of disinfectants and pesticides used in aquaculture on tropical aquatic ecosystems. The main objectives of this project are to identify aquatic non-target species that are sensitive to environmental concentrations of these compounds and perform laboratory and semi-field experiments in order to estimate the potential effects of aquaculture-induced pollution on the structure and functioning of aquatic ecosystems. The experimental part of the project will be carried out in South-East Asia, under the supervision of an Asian university and Wageningen University.
