Description Wageningen Marine Research is looking for a student who wants to participate in research on the ecological development of (restored) intertidal areas in the Western Scheldt. This involves processing and analyzing benthic animal samples in the laboratory in combination with literature research and performing data analysis (in R).

As a result of the deepening of the shipping channel of the Western Scheldt, a number of nature restoration projects are currently underway. In these, by means of constructing a number of breakwaters, intertidal areas are being developed along the banks of the Westerschelde (at Bath and Zimmerman) and on the Ossenisse plate. Wageningen Marine Research is investigating whether these interventions actually lead to nature development by monitoring changes in the benthic community (benthos) and birds in these areas.

Next summer we will conduct a second sampling campaign in which we will investigate development of the benthic community since 2022. The benthic samples will be identified at the species level in the lab, followed by statistical analysis to see if the benthic community is evolving.
We are looking for an enthusiastic student who would like to help identify benthic species in the lab, learn more about nature in the Western Scheldt, and who enjoys performing both literature research and data analysis in R. You will work in a driven team of junior researchers and experienced researchers and laboratory specialists in the field of species identification.
